Hey, family, I found myself struggling again with responsibilities in ministry, marriage, and with Rose being sick, too. She got really, really sick, a really bad infection, and began to have ulcers in her mouth. And I was feeling so overwhelmed and exasperated. And I just pictured Blessed Mother. And I kept saying in my heart, “Man, I wish I just need a mother right now. I need a mother to talk to. And I pictured Blessed Mother. And I felt as if she was like, “I am here. Come and talk to me. I’m here to give you so much wisdom and counsel.”
I just read in Sirach, during my Lord’s supper about wisdom. To seek wisdom is a treasure of life. It’s better than gold and silver. And I knew that I needed to really go to her.
So I began, “Mother of mercy, I’ve longed to speak with you concerning many things in motherhood. Please help me navigate through this season to prepare for the next and the journey ahead. I really need your wisdom and counsel.” And I was also trying to figure out homeschooling and also about teaching the children that we have in Mankessim, just so many thoughts.
Our Mother of Mercy immediately began:
“First, be faithful to pray the rosary, the mother of mercy chaplet will do on very busy days, beloved, but it’s in the Rosary, where I hear a tender voice in its cry for help from one of my children and I come immediately to your aid. On the days you’re unable, just say Hail Mary throughout the day during your duties, that too will suffice as you have been doing. I am here to help you, little one. Truly, I am. Thank you for coming to me this time again. You don’t come to me enough, but I am grateful you have come today.” She said, smiling.
“Oh, Blessed Mother, help me.”
She continued:
“First things first. Motherhood is all about love and sacrifice. You are pouring yourself into a soul that Jesus has entrusted to you. Never take that for granted. It is the most honourable, beautiful and highest call. That is why it’s attacked so much. It’s in Motherhood that you learn about the tenderness of God the Father. You understand His love, His sacrifice, His suffering when you suffer, just as you suffer when your child suffers. His jealous love and strictness over you because you do the same for your child. All that you do for them is motivated by love whether they realize it or not even when it pains them. As they mature, they understand your hedge around them is for their protection. And if they knew of your constant gaze of love.”
It’s so true, guys, it feels as if I finally relinquish trying to do so much. Before, if I could be honest with you guys, having Rose, I was just looking forward to her falling asleep, so I can get so much done, because I felt so overwhelmed with my responsibilities and the demands the Lord has given me. And now, after some time and a few messages ago as I shared with you guys, the Lord really had me change my heart and my mindset and just recognizing what a gift she is and also trying to be very present with her in the moment. And so I just had fun, just fun, when I’m not able to get things done and just being with her and spending time with her, taking walks with her. And there’s so many times I look at her and I’m just adore her and I just have so much love for her, and I love her wonder and her desire to explore. And there’s many times, of course, she fights me when she’s trying to touch a hot kettle or where she’s on a staircase and she wants to walk down by herself. I grab her and she scream and wail not recognizing I’m trying to protect her. And it makes me recognize, wait a minute, this is how Jesus feels. This is what it looks like, you know, with God the Father when He looks down upon us and walks with us and we want something so badly that we think is exciting. It’s fun, but it’s very dangerous. It could harm us; it could hurt us and even kill us. And He puts a hedge, He stops it, He delays it, He puts some type of impediment, roadblock, and we fight it, not recognizing it’s for our protection. That’s what loving Father is.
And then when she was suffering, and she was sick, there was a moment where she had a really, really fussy, fussy, fussy day. And about two or three days later, we found out the cause that she was allergic to the medication. And she started getting better, but she still had the sores and were terrible, guys. Her gums were bleeding, her mouth, the bores on her lips. And I just remember looking at her and I actually apologized to her and said, “I’m so sorry. Would you forgive me? I’m so sorry that I got frustrated within that day fussiness. I had no idea the pain you were going through.” And so those remaining three days, I was just so overwhelmingly tender with her, compassionate, and just spoiling her than I usually do. and the moments that I held her close; I’ll begin to pray. Pray for other sick children, pray for mothers with sick children as well, because me and Derrick were so burdened when she was sick and a bit worried at times when she was not getting any better and it was getting worse. There were many late nights that she wouldn’t sleep. She was so restless.
And so in those moments, I just realized like, “how did my mom do it? how do mothers do it?” My goodness, the mothers do multiple kids who are sick. The suffering you go through, you feel such acutely. Their pain, their restlessness, you feel it all. and also begin to pray for the kids who don’t have that love of a mother. The orphans, those who have maybe emotionally absent mothers who are struggling with different things and just feel so alone and they’re young, you know, they can’t express their emotions or feelings, but they feel neglected and abandoned. So, anytime I would hold Rose in my hands, I would just pray. I pray for those kids and I’ll say, “Lord, every kiss, every hug, every embrace, every time that I just put my hands in her curly hair, every time that I just do over her, Lord, would you multiply that? Like echo that throughout the universe and on earth that we multiply to touch these precious, precious little ones who have no one.” And I feel in my heart that the Lord answered that, and you continue to. I just say, “Lord, you called me to a mother of souls. So even though I may not be present, physically present to mother every child, Lord, would you use my mothering of Rose and just multiply it? everything that I do for her in love, multiply it somehow so the other children can be touched.
And so that’s what the Mother of Mercy was expressing to me here again and about the tenderness of a mother and how it really shows and is a great example of the tenderness of God the Father.
Mother of Mercy continued:
“It’s also one of great pain, great stress and anxiety at various times, especially when you must let them go to learn for themselves. Like a shoot bursting forth from the soil of your love, discipline, training and instructions. Do not stifle them, hinder them or resist the growth in anyway. Rather, you will crush them. They too must also journey towards the sun. Even if their roots and their stems begin to wind and bend, you must trust that you have trained a child in the way they should go, they will indeed not depart from it and no matter how crooked they may get in their journey or growth. Like a beautiful flower in bloom, their petals will open and again their face will be turned towards the sun. This she also meant the Son Jesus Christ. You must trust the process.”
“Wow, thank you, Mother of Mercy. What a beautiful analogy. How would one navigate motherhood responsibilities, ministry, family?”
“Take it one day at a time, my beloved daughter. One day at a time, which will help you be in the moment.” And then a flash thought came to my mind of some videos I put to watch later. Videos of mothers talking about homeschooling and responsibilities, teaching children.
And Mother of Mercy interjected immediately:
“Yes, let this week be of one of prayer and also equipping. Focus on that this week, we have led you to a few places to equip yourself with tools and I will help you with the rest. You must let go of your beloved, you have made his love an idol, little one.”
And as aside, family, we have a prayer group called Prayer for Husbands. And me and some of the ladies were talking about our spouses. And husbands as the Lord have encouraged us to pray for them faithfully. And many of us are going through various trials with our spouses. And the majority of us, we all come to the same consensus, all of us, that we’re married, we feel very alone in our marriages at times. Sometimes even neglected because maybe we don’t have the same understanding or our spouses don’t understand our love language or just having our emotional needs be met. And we’re discussing and talking about that. And me and my beloved have been going through a trial concerning that which I’ve shared that with him, like I really feel lonely and neglected and there’s times I’ve quarrelled about it.
“Oh, Lord, I am a hot mess.” So Mother of Mercy is really addressing that. I felt as if this was really a heart-to-heart conversation with my mom and I think it would be a blessing to many wives and many mothers listening in. So back to Mother of Mercy.
She says:
“There are many wives who have done the same thing, and the Lord understand your pain very much, because there’re wounds in His heart many times from His distracted bride. Many who are distracted by their husbands in actions and inactions, forgetting they are first married to Him, Jesus. He is so very attentive, ever ready to fill that void, and make you content with Him alone. Yes, one of the gifts of marriage is companionship, friendship and the deepest love you can find, which also comes with the deepest pain. But your love should be of service, not selfish, self-seeking or self-pleasing.”
And I’ve heard that before, guys. I said, “Oh, Mother, it’s so hard, it’s easier said than done. It’s hard to be in a marriage and still feel alone.”
“It is, beloved, but you’re not alone, you have Jesus, let Him be your joy. Ask Him to love your husband the way that He desires for you to love, and that your husband’s heart would be turned towards Him. Turning towards Jesus, because if you have a husband who is distracted, even by holy things like ministry, and yet neglects you, his heart is not fully turned towards Jesus. Whatever he is consumed by, has also become an idol for him. So that is where you pray and be patient, my beloved one. Have I not been faithful to answer many of the smallest prayers?”
“Yes, Mother, you truly have, truly, you have.” Truly, she has, guys. Jesus told me to write down the smallest details of things I want to see my beloved do for me, small things. And I remember I just wrote down a list; I entrusted to Mother of Mercy. And sure enough, it’s been a full year. And many of those things have been answered.
And me and the wives were also talking about times where things seem to be going at a good pace, and everything is working. All of a sudden, attack or blow happens, an argument and then you find yourself right back to where you were or things going back to the same cycle and patterns, and it’s painful. So I also addressed that to our Mother, and I said, “It’s also painful, Mother, when things change and then they go back. It can cause one to lose hope or get weary and the disappointments.”
And she responded:
“Another role as a wife is to contend for your spouse’s soul. When these things happen, you contend, contend, little one, in prayer. The enemy has set an all-out assault against families, and if he can stop wives from praying for their husbands and husbands to stop praying for their wives or stop praying at all, then he has them. He’s always after the children. That is how he dealt with Adam and Eve.”
And I thought, “Wow, after the fall, because of God’s pronouncement over them, their once perfect, harmonious, sweet fellowship and union with each other was also broken.
Genesis 3: 8-13, 16-24 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labour you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat and live forever.” So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
Our Mother of Mercy continued, “There was great tension between them at various times. They argued and had disagreements like normal couples do. And indeed, as God said to Eve, her desire would to be over her husband, and she did in various ways, in her nature and character. Adam was unable to look at her the same again. The perfect love they once had was distorted, not filled with selfishness, great resentment and frustration. They were still man and woman, united by God, but distant their hearts towards one another. And so Satan got in and began to plant the seed early in Cain, as Abel was already the favoured one. Then once the sin in his heart was full-blown, he put an end to his brother.”
Genesis 4:8-12 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”
“The open gate was through Adam and Eve, his parents. That is how Satan works, and that is how sin distorts so much in a marriage. That is why it’s truly important to not let the sun go down on not only on your anger but on any sin between you two. Address it, pray about it, forgive and let go. Even if the other doesn’t receive it or see it, you be the bigger person. Pray, forgive and let go, and remember they are after the children.”
And that was the end of our Mother of Mercy’s amazing wisdom. Wow, what revelation into Adam and Eve and into marriage that way and about our children. May the Lord give us the grace. Oh, as wives and mothers to truly rise up in wisdom with our children and our spouses.
